Review (36:02):

Fist of the North Star (movie), a remake of the first arc of the TV show (itself a remake of the famous manga by Tetsuo Hara and Buronson), released to Japanese movie-goers in 1986 with greatly improved art and animation over the TV series but also, like almost all anime movie remakes, a heavily cut down plot.  General TV Series director Toyoo Ashida returned to helm the film along with character designer & animation director Masami Suda and many other Toei Animation staff; but, for my money, it’s the soundtrack by classical composer Katsuhisa Hattori and rock group Kodomo Band (“Heart of Darkness”, “Purple Eyes”) that provides the real emotional punch making this absurdly macho, apocalyptic splatter-fest seem almost poignant.  Tune in for the full review!

  1. About the format, I’m ok with the friendly talk at the beginning if not too long.
And the parts that I most like to hear are parts about who made, when, why, how, with whom, the story about the subject of the cast. What it meant, what it means now.

    • Panino,

Thanks for taking the time to listen and reply! We appreciate both a lot.

We are definitely massaging the format still, trying to trim some of the fat on the pre-game talk so to speak, so hopefully we can find a balance where it is still enjoyable to listen to for the you/the audience.

Regarding the production notes, we try to give as much context as we can before viewing. We think this aids one another and the audience tremendously. Truthfully though I don’t think we will ever do as comprehensive a job as could be done, simply because we lack the deep knowledge that many other podcasts/blogs bring to the table. Because of that we try and provide the in-depth analysis in the post-viewing segment to add our unique voice to the discussion; whether or not we are successful is, of course, up to you.

Thanks again for listening and I hope you enjoyed it, and I look forward to any other insights you or feedback you have on this or future episodes!

      • You don’t need to go out of your way to try to find some information, you just need to remember to try to talk about what you already know. If the cast try too hard to do this could be a bit of off topic, and not everyone want to hear.

  2. Is there some way to read the review? To have so many articles only available in audio format is frustrating (navigating on console).
